Classification of Insulating Materials and Their Heat Resistance Ratings
Insulating materials are classified into three categories based on their physical states: gas, liquid, and solid. Their thermal resistance ranges from Class Y (90°C) up to Class 250. Gases such as SF₆ and C4F7N exhibit high dielectric strength and excellent arc-quenching capabilities; liquids like transformer oil and silicone oil combine insulation properties with effective heat dissipation. Solids—including materials like epoxy resin, polyimide, and mica—are widely used in applications such as cables, insulators, and winding insulation. The thermal resistance grade determines a material's stability and longevity under prolonged exposure to high temperatures, making it a critical factor in material selection.
